Natural Remedies For Bronchitis

Posted by dr natural On November - 9 - 2008

Bronchitis

The main symptoms of bronchitis are wheezing and persistent, phlegm-producing coughing.

Inflammation of the airways in the lungs can result from infection after a cold or flu.

For some it may be a chronic debilitating condition.

It is most common in people who smoke or live in heavily polluted areas.

Babies and the elderly may also develop bronchitis if their immune system has been weakened by a virus.

Dietary Advice To Reduce Bronchitis

Cut down on processed, sugary foods and foods made from white flour, which deplete the body of vital nutrients. Increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and eat more garlic, onions and leeks to help combat chest infections. It can also help to take garlic supplements. Use herbs and spices such as rosemary, thyme and cinnamon in your cooking, as these can help clear your chest.

Lungwort or shredded elecampane root are excellent herbal remedies for bronchitis. Use 1 tsp of lungwort to make a cup of tea and drink three times a day. Or pour a cup of cold water onto 1 tsp of elecampane, boil and stand for 8 to 10 hours. Heat and drink three times a day.

Echinacea and goldenseal tinctures help the body fight infection. Take as directed.

Beneficial essential oils include eucalyptus, frankincense, lavender, pine and cedarwood. Add 4 drops to a bowl of almost boiling water and use as a steam inhalation 2 or 3 times a day. Add 8 drops of oil to your bath water, 4 drops for children over seven. Do not add eucalyptus, or pine unless it is Scots, to the bath as these oils can irritate the skin. Fifteen drops of one or more oils in 25 ml grapeseed or sweet almond oil makes an excellent decongesting chest or back rub. Use twice a day. Don’t use inhalations for children under two, and always supervise older children. Avoid if asthmatic.

Bronchitis is defined as a condition characterized by the irritation and inflammation of the bronchial tubes. There are two kinds of bronchitis. One is acute bronchitis and the other is called chronic bronchitis. Treatment of bronchitis also differs between one that is caused by a virus and that of bacteria. Look for a reputable and experienced doctor to get the proper diagnosis.
