Constipation
Usually a temporary problem, caused by poor diet, laxative abuse, tension, dehydration, pregnancy or a sluggish bowel. In some cases constipation may be a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome or diverticulitis, and in rare cases bowel cancer.
Dietary Advice To Avoid Constipation
Eat lots of raw or lightly cooked fruit and vegetables. Gradually up your fiber intake with wholegrain breads, pasta and oats. Apples, bananas, dried apricots and figs can help bowel movements. Live yogurt daily encourages the bacteria that help bulk out stools. Drink plenty of water and diluted fruit juice. You can also try extracts of senna or figs (both natural laxatives), and aloe vera supplement can be very beneficial.
Complimentary Natural Remedies For Constipation
Abdominal massage can make a difference, used along with diet and lifestyle changes. First, drink some hot water sweetened with a few teaspoons of honey (a gentle laxative). Ask someone to massage your abdomen for you, while you lie down comfortably. Add 10 drops marjoram or rosemary oil to 25ml grapeseed or sweet almond oil. Use slow, clockwise, circular strokes with the flat of the hand for 10 minutes, up to twice a day. If pregnant, avoid marjoram and rosemary oils.
For constipation with no desire to open the bowels, try homeopathic Alumina 6c, 2-hourly for up to 10 doses. If there is great urgency but few stools, try Nux vomica 6c. With children, especially if colicky, try Plumbum 6c. Always consult a doctor if you have persistent constipation or a worrying change in bowel habits.
