Cramp

Sudden, painful spasm of the muscle fibers can occur in any large muscle group, but the calf muscles are most common. Cramp often occurs during or after vigorous exercise, but can also be caused by repetitive movements or from being too long in an awkward position. Night cramps may be caused by poor circulation. Cramp can be eased by stretching the affected muscles. Walking on the leg may be enough to relieve the spasm. If not, you need to flex your foot and massage the area. A 15 minute warm up routine helps prevent cramp while exercising.

Dietary Advice To Avoid Cramp

Potassium-rich bananas help prevent cramp, as could calcium, so eat more dark green leafy vegetables, milk, cheese and yogurt. Try supplementing with 100 to 400 iu of vitamin E a day. For night cramps drink tonic water, which contains quinine. Cut down on coffee and alcohol to help your circulation.

Massage of the area and flexing often relieve painful spasms. For foot cramp, gently bend the toes towards the body, while holding the heel with the other hand. Then stroke the sole of the foot with the heel of your hand or your thumb.

For calf cramp, flex the whole foot so your toes point towards the body and you feel a pulling sensation in the calf muscles. Knead the calf muscles firmly, working up to the knee and down again.

If the hamstrings are affected, lie on your back and raise the leg, with the knee straight and toes flexed towards you. Stroke up the back of the thigh firmly.

If the pain returns, massage with 15 drops Roman or German chamomile, lavender, marjoram or rosemary essential oil in 25 ml grapeseed or sweet almond oil. If pregnant, avoid marjoram and rosemary oils.
