Dandruff
A chronic scalp disorder, dandruff is characterized by an itchy scalp and an excess of white flakes off the skin of the scalp. The skin cells starting to grow in the dermis and work their way up to form a layer of dead cells on the skin surface.
Brushing our hair gets rid of most of these microscopic dead cells without us even noticing. When they get larger due to fungal infection or an overly dry scalp, it may result in the condition dandruff.
Dietary Advice For Dandruff
May be related to food sensitivity or a poor diet. Avoid refined carbohydrates and alcohol, and opt for a varied fresh food diet with plenty of nuts, seeds, dried and fresh fruit, vegetables and oily fish. If you suspect a food sensitivity, eliminate citrus fruit and juices, wheat and dairy produce for up to six weeks, then re-introduce them one by one to see if they cause irritation.
Supplement with vitamin E and massage vitamin E oil into the scalp at night for a couple of weeks. Try taking 4 500 mg evening primrose oil capsules a day to maintain a healthy scalp.
Complementary Remedies For Dandruff
Some therapists believe dandruff is encouraged by poor circulation and can be helped by massaging with essential oils: put 15 ml cider vinegar into a dark glass bottle (cider vinegar helps to normalize the skin’s acid/alkaline balance), and add 10 drops lavender and 5 drops Roman chamomile oil, and 300 ml distilled water. Shake the mixture well before each application. Use on wet or dry hair 3 times a week and don’t rinse off.
Dandruff is associated with an overgrowth of yeast-like fungi normally present on the scalp. Constitutional treatment from a herbalist or homeopath could help resolve the underlying problem.
