Earache or Ear Infection
Earache can occur as a secondary infection in children who have a viral or bacterial infection in the throat or nose, and can also be a symptom of mumps or measles.
Pus, or a bloody discharge from the ear, indicates a burst eardrum from the pressure of inflammatory fluid in the middle ear.
Dietary Advice For Earache or Ear Infection
Breast-fed babies are less likely to develop ear infections than bottle-fed babies. Adding garlic to the diet of older children, or taking a one-a-day garlic capsule, can help prevent ear infections. Two one-a day garlic capsules can help to clear an infection in children over the age of 3, 4 tablets have a similar antibiotic effect in adults.
Citrus fruits, berries, bananas and wholewheat bread are rich in vitamins C and B6, which help build a healthy immune system. A variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables in the diet contribute antioxidant nutrients which help the body fight infection. Eliminating dairy products may help reduce the risk of recurrent infection in those who are sensitive to them.
Complimentary Remedies For Earache or Ear Infection
German chamomile, lavender, peppermint and rosemary essential oils can be beneficial. Add 1 or 2 drops to an egg cup of warm grapeseed or sweet almond oil. Using a teaspoon, put a few drops into the ear and plug with a small ball of cotton wool. Do this first thing in the morning and last thing at night until the earache improves.
Applying a warm compress to the affected ear, or laying the child’s head against a covered hot-water bottle, can help ease the pain and resolve the infection.
Give 2 drops Rescue Remedy every 20 minutes to relieve pain and panic in a frightened child. Children who are inconsolable with pain may benefit from the homeopathic remedy Chamomilla 6c; children delirious with hot throbbing pain from Belladonna 6c; and those whose earache comes on suddenly from Aconite 6c. Give every 15 minutes for up to 8 doses.
Cranial osteopathy can sometimes help prevent recurrent earache. If earache persists, for more than 48 hours, always consult your doctor.
