Eczema
There are several types of eczema. The symptoms include an itchy, red, painful, weepy rash, or dry, flaky skin. Afterwards, the skin may crack and bleed. Long-term eczema needs to be treated by a doctor or qualified complementary therapist. However, self-help measures can relieve symptoms. Try not to wear clothes made from potential irritants such as wool – which may contain lanolin – and synthetic fibers; avoid biological washing powders and perfumes, and use a water filter (for drinking and cooking purposes) to reduce the amount of chemicals in tap water.
Dietary Advice For Eczema
Eczema can be triggered by sensitivity to foods such as cow’s milk, food colorings and wheat products. If this seems possible, see a nutritional therapist about an elimination diet and suitable alternatives. Eat only fresh wholefoods, with plenty of fruit and vegetables, preferably organic. Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated. Some people benefit from high doses of evening primrose oil, for example 6 500 mg capsules a day (2 to 4 capsules for children over 3 years) for 6 months, with lower doses thereafter.
Complementary Remedies For Eczema
Essential oils such as German chamomile, lavender and juniper berry, applied on a lukewarm or cold compress, can ease irritation. Add 4 to 6 drops essential oil to 600 ml water. Soak a piece of clean, folded cotton in the water, wring out and apply to the affected area for 20 minutes.
Chamomile cream, or hypericum and calendula cream (Hypercal), can soothe itchy eczema and reduce the risk of infection. Cool chamomile tea also makes a soothing skin wash. For weeping eczema apply a cold compress using 4 drops juniper berry oil in 600 ml cold water. If pregnant, avoid juniper berry oil.
The homeopathic remedy Graphites 6c is good for weepy eczema with a honey-colored discharge that forms in the folds of the skin. Rhus tox 6c helps itchy, blistering skin that is worse after scratching. Petroleum 6c is good for sensitive, rough and broken skin that cracks and bleeds easily. Sulphur 6c is helpful for hot, dry eczema which is red and itchy. Take once a day for up to 10 days and stop at the first sign of improvement.
Research has shown Chinese herbal medicine to be particularly successful in treating eczema, but you should always consult a qualified practitioner.
