Eye Strain
Using computers, and living and working in centrally-heated and air-conditioned buildings, can cause eyes to become dry, itchy and tired. Reading or watching many hours of television in poor light can also strain the eyes and result in focusing problems. One of the best ways to soothe and refresh tired eyes is to lie down in a darkened room, with feet raised slightly above head level, for 10 to 20 minutes. Alternatively, sit with your elbows on a desk or table, close your eyes and cover them with your slightly cupped hands, resting the heel of your hand on your cheekbone and your fingertips on your forehead. Stay like this for 5 to 10 minutes and then slowly start opening your fingers to let the light in, before opening your eyes.
Dietary Advice For Eye Strain
Avoid smoking, sugar, white flour and fried foods, all of which deplete the vitamins needed for healthy eyes. Research at the University of New Hampshire, USA, has shown that the carotenoids in dark green, red, orange and yellow fruit and vegetables can strengthen the eyes, reduce fatigue and prevent problems like cataracts occurring later in life. Top up with a good antioxidant complex supplement, or look for special eye vitamin formulas that contain a carotenoid called lutein, betacarotene, zeaxanthin and zinc.
Complimentary Remedies For Eye Strain
Chamomile and peppermint are soothing and cooling to tired, irritated or puffy eyes. But do not use essential oils near the eyes as they may cause irritation. Instead, soak 2 chamomile or peppermint tea bags in enough boiling water to cover them. Allow to cool (chill in the fridge for extra effect), squeeze out excess water, apply to dosed eyes and relax for 10 to 15 minutes. You can also use ordinary cool, damp tea bags, as the tannin in tea can help relieve inflammation and watery eyes.
Alternatively, the herb eyebright is useful for eye strain and sore, itching or sensitive eyes. Add 30 drops of eyebright tincture to a glass of cooled, boiled water, soak 2 clean cotton pads in the wash and bathe the eyes. Use a separate pad for each eye. Simply splashing with water stimulates blood flow and tones the eyes and surrounding tissues. If your eyes feel tired early in the day, splash cold water onto your closed eyes about 20 times and pat dry with a towel. In the evening use warm water, which is more relaxing.
