This common problem used to be called fibrositis, or muscular rheumatism. It is characterized by muscle pain usually felt in the back, shoulder and neck, although it can occur in other large muscle groups such as the buttocks. It causes aching or a sharp, or searing, pain and it can come on suddenly and clear quickly, or be a more longstanding problem. Sometimes it occurs as a result of repeated bouts of over-strenuous exercise, at others it may be triggered by cold, but it is often related to stress and tension. Other symptoms include morning stiffness and muscle tenderness. Many people with fibromyalgia have sleep problems, depression, headaches, restless legs, painful periods, irritable bowel syndrome and Raynaud’s phenomenon (when the fingers and toes become hypersensitive to cold.) Many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia are similar to those of chronic fatigue syndrome.
Complimentary Remedies For Fibromyalgia
General advice includes trying to achieve a good balance of exercise and rest, and trying to maintain a good posture.
Dandelion tea is a diuretic that helps flush waste products from the body.
Relax in a very warm bath to which you have added 6 tbsp sea salt and 8 drops either marjoram, lavender, Roman chamomile, rosemary or coriander oil. The salt encourages perspiration and so helps eliminate tissue waste such as lactic and uric acid. These wastes accumulate in taut muscles and cause pain. After the bath ask a friend or partner to massage the painful areas, or preferably the whole of the back, neck and shoulders, with any of the oils mentioned above. Use 12 to 15 drops oil to 25 ml grapeseed or sweet almond oil, or add the following warming blend to 25 ml carrier oil: 4 drops black pepper, 4 drops coriander, 5 drops marjoram. If pregnant avoid rosemary and marjoram oils.
The homeopathic remedy Arnica 6c can sometimes help relieve pain after exercise. Try taking 1 tablet every 30 minutes for 4 doses. People with long-term fibromyalgia often benefit from any type of professional ‘hands on’ therapy such as massage, and especially osteopathy and chiropractic.

My clients agree with you: Alternative techniques for fibromyalgia relief, such as Dandelion Tea, warm soaking baths and massage of taut muscles are effective in reducing discomfort caused by fibromyalgia.
Additionally, bodywork such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release and craniosacral therapy are the preferred method of pain relief as reported in recent medical studies.
