Painful, persistent stiffness and limited movement in the shoulder is known as a frozen shoulder. The problem occurs when some of the tissue around the shoulder joint becomes thickened and inflamed, either after an injury or vigorous exercise, or for no known reason. This makes simple tasks such as brushing your hair, dressing and undressing and drawing the curtains excruciatingly painful. Gentle exercise, such as swimming in warm water, can loosen the shoulder.
Dietary Advice For Frozen Shoulders
All joint problems can benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of essential fatty acids found in seeds, nuts, vegetable oils and oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon. Some people also benefit from supplements of fish oil, borage seed oil or blackcurrant seed oil.
There is evidence that a diet low in the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, selenium and zinc, may contribute to joint disorders. Brightly colored fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds, olive oil and wholegrains provide these nutrients. In addition, reduce your consumption of red meat, red wine, port and sherry, caffeine and salt, which can sometimes make joint pain worse.
Complimentary Remedies For Frozen Shoulders
Hydrotherapy, using alternate hot and cold treatments, can increase the circulation to the joint and reduce inflammation. Try using a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel and a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. Hold the peas over the pain for 2 minutes, then the hot water bottle for 3 to 5 minutes. Repeat at least 3 times, several times a day.
An aromatic salt bath can also help soothe muscles and clear metabolic wastes which accumulate in damaged tissue and contribute to pain. Add 6 tbsp sea salt to the bath. When the bath is full add 2 drops rosemary essential oil, 3 drops marjoram and 3 drops lavender. Relax, with your shoulders submerged, for 15 minutes. Afterwards, blend 2 drops rosemary, 3 drops marjoram and 3 drops lavender oil with 1 tbsp carrier oil or 50/50 carrier and hypericum oils and ask someone to massage your neck and shoulders for 15 to 20 minutes. Finish by rotating your shoulders and shaking your arms to improve mobility and circulation. If pregnant, avoid marjoram and rosemary oils.
The biochemic tissue salt Ferr phos can help with the pain and inflammation. Take 3 times a day until the pain eases. Alternatively, try the homeopathic remedies Rhus tox 6c or Bryonia 6c. Take 1 tablet 3 times a day for a week.
On a professional level, acupuncture can help relieve pain. Joint problems, including frozen shoulder, may benefit from professional manipulative techniques such as osteopathy.
